Marc Vossen, former CEO of NGroup, shares the qualities that make an inspired and inspiring leader.

How do you become an inspired and inspiring leader? Marc Vossen, the recently retired former CEO of NGroup, tackles the question in a new episode of the Once Upon a Business podcast.

“A dream you dream alone is only a dream, a dream you dream together is reality”. With this inspiring quote from John Lennon, Marc Vossen, former CEO of NGroup, takes us straight into his vision of leadership.

“Throughout my entire career, I was never able to read a company balance sheet. I was always surrounded by highly competent people whom I trusted completely, who could do it for me and pull out the essentials”, confides the man who headed, among others, the Nostalgie and NRJ Belgium radio stations.

“People always come before profit”

This statement, surprising at first coming from a business leader, echoes a very current management style: participative leadership. “People were always at the center of our strategy, before profit. Yes, of course, you have to be profitable, but never at the expense of people”, he explains. The group, which generates around 26 million euros in revenue, can rightly claim to have won its bet.

"Ultimately, the leader's question is 'what do you think?'. And the more you can ask that question, the more confidence you give them. And a virtuous circle is created. (...) It's the art of deciding together.”

The former executive continues: “Kindness and trust lead people to be authentic. Because they are in an environment that allows them to be authentic. The more authentic you are, the more self-confidence you have and the more you can be who you really are. And the more self-confidence you have, the more you can take on responsibility, be bold and dare. And the more responsibility you can take on, the more you can become a leader and assert your leadership. The more you can assert your leadership, the more you can share it with those around you. Ultimately, the leader's question is 'what do you think?'. And the more you can ask that question, the more confidence you give them. And a virtuous circle is created. (...) It's the art of deciding together.”

He concludes: “If CEOs and managers don't practice participative leadership today and tomorrow, they will die.”

In this exclusive podcast, Marc Vossen opens up candidly about many moments of his life: his fear of dying at 59, his rebirth, and his dive into the pool with… Michel Fugain.
