About Waasland-Beveren

Waasland-Beveren is a Belgian football club founded in May 2010. Two years after Waasland and Beveren merged, the Lions won the final. It was a turning point for the team, which has stayed in the top flight of Belgian football ever since. The club was recently taken over by Bolt Football Holdings, a company led by experienced American sports investors David Blitzer, Jahm Najafi and Jeff Moorad. New prospects are now opening up for Waasland-Beveren.

The merged team’s mission is to keep its supporters happy, in other words, to finish the season in the top flight. Brandon, Waasland-Beveren’s finance director, explains his goal of building a club that is stable over the long term, together with the American shareholders. The future of the young players in the organization is also one of his top priorities.

Starting point and what EMASPHERE brought

  • Starting point

    • Manual operations
    • Dashboards built in Excel
    • Basic budgets, no detailed forecasts
    • Difficult collaboration
  • What EMASPHERE brought

    • Modernized reporting
    • Greater responsiveness
    • A tool for building forecasts
    • Easy, intuitive collaboration

A systematic, structured approach

Since CEO Antoine Gobin arrived, the club has structured its management by digitalizing processes across its departments. He is doing everything he can to help each employee work more efficiently and focus on their core tasks.

“Before EMASPHERE, the organization didn’t yet have state-of-the-art tools. The accountants were working with dozens of Excel files at the same time,” says Brandon, who wanted to improve the way things worked.

EMASPHERE has made us much more responsive. We use the time we save to look for opportunities and ways to support other areas.

A complete reporting tool to professionalize finance

“Our profit and loss accounting was very basic and unclear. Our cash position was worked out by adding and subtracting. Budgeting was done through the income statement in our accounting software. On top of that, we had no detailed forecasts, no monthly tracking, and so on,” Brandon explains.

The club wants to innovate and become more professional on the financial side. With that in mind, Brandon went looking for a complete management tool to optimize the club’s accounting. In his view, EMASPHERE not only saves a huge amount of time and boosts efficiency, it also delivers high-quality reports.

“The club badly needed a reporting tool to run analyses, find opportunities, assess risks and pull relevant data out of the accounts. Now we can finally produce forecasts on an annual basis and know exactly how much is coming in and going out,” Brandon continues.

Better collaboration

In choosing EMASPHERE as the club’s performance management solution, the finance director also had Waasland-Beveren’s American shareholders in mind, as they wanted a clear, fast overview of the club’s financial data.

“Reports used to be produced as and when they were needed. Now they are far more thought through, detailed and frequent,” says Brandon.

Waasland-Beveren also has to provide a lot of financial data to the Pro League, especially for licensing.

“These financial documents have a specific format that we can now build into our reports. All we have to do is paste them into the Pro League tool. That’s real efficiency!”

Time to go digital

Every finance director needs detailed, frequent reports. Cash flow monitoring is more essential than ever. “Invest in a tool and get on board,” Brandon advises.

“A football club needs a lot of cash because of transfers and shareholders. Modernize and grow your business at the same time, and forget the old, tedious formats. Accurate, reliable figures help you draw the right conclusions. That way you can assess risks and opportunities properly and in detail,” the finance director concludes.
