Be Burger automates reporting for its 8 entities

Black Angus beef, bread from local bakeries, and fresh potato or sweet potato fries: these are the quality ingredients used by Be Burger, a restaurant chain specializing in burgers and homemade fries. Since opening its first restaurant in 2015, the company has gone from strength to strength and now runs 7 restaurants in Belgium.

The need to move from manual Excel reporting to automated consolidated reporting

With such rapid growth, Maxime Herbays, CFO of Be Burger, was spending a lot of time each month building a consolidated report in Excel. He and the management team also wanted an easier way to track new, specific indicators such as the staff cost ratio, to improve the profitability of each restaurant. Be Burger therefore chose EMASPHERE to automate its reporting and gain visibility into the performance of every restaurant.

I went from almost 3 days a month building a consolidated report to just 1 day.

Maxime Herbays CFO, Be Burger

A consolidated report for 8 entities, ready in 1 day

As each Be Burger restaurant is a separate company, Maxime Herbays spent much of his time building consolidated management reports in Excel. He explains:

“Every month we have to produce a consolidated report, and it used to take almost 3 days of work. We had to pull a trial balance, review it, make sure everything had been entered correctly, make the necessary corrections and finally consolidate it all.”

With EMASPHERE, the CFO has cut the time spent on reporting by a factor of 3. The solution collects and centralizes the accounting data and automatically turns it into management dashboards ready for analysis. Once the report is created, Maxime Herbays uses the information in EMASPHERE to check that the accounts are accurate. He adds:

“I’ve become more efficient. I now spend on average one day a month finalizing our consolidated reports. I use that time to check the results and make any corrections needed in the accounts. If we create an account that isn’t included in the EMASPHERE mapping, an extra line appears and we know exactly where to look in the accounts. That way we don’t lose any information.”

Automatic sub-consolidation for easier comparisons

When reports were built by hand, the CFO wished he had more visibility into interim results.

“Before, we had to extract the accounting information for each restaurant to get a complete view. Besides being time-consuming, we lacked visibility, because until all 8 companies were finalized we couldn’t know the consolidated result.”

EMASPHERE’s management consolidation features have given Be Burger more flexibility. The company now has an overview of the income statements of its 8 entities (7 restaurants plus the parent company), and in just a few clicks it can choose to view the consolidated results of only 3 of its restaurants. Maxime Herbays continues:

“As soon as we log in to EMASPHERE, we automatically see the consolidated result to date and the history of previous months, and we can easily compare the best-performing restaurant with the weakest.”
